Cont. Classical Trio
This was a session for a contemporary classical trio including Yuko Togami (Drums), Ayumi Ishito (Bari Sax), and Réma Hasumi (Piano). The players were all placed in the same room and recorded with a 7.1.4 multichannel microphone array, Similar to the array used for the Cuartetango session.
Each instrument was close miked while the entire trio was captured with a surround sound array. The drum set had each drum close miked and a Glyn Johns style overhead set-up with a Neumann U87 and a Sennheiser 8050.
Inside the piano a pair of U87s make an ORTF as the close miking system.
Here you can see a wide shot of the main system. There is a digital diagram that describes the layout of the main system below. There were five DPA 4011 covering most of the main layer and Sennheiser MKH 800s pointed above to create the height channels. A wide pair of omni tube Neumann M150s are placed between the L and C 4011s as well as between C and R.
In the mix, I folded this array down to stereo by turning the point of view 90º. This make the L and Ls microphones on the piano turn into R and L while the R and Rs mics on the drum set turn into L and R. The sax was then placed in the center and the height channels and M150s weren’t used.
I mixed Blood in ProTools with outboard gear, summing analog to the SSL Duality.
Improv 3 I mixed in Logic, in the box.
